Caulfield named President of the NSCA Foundation Board of Directors
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Scott Caulfield, the first full-time Director of Strength & Conditioning at Norwich University, has been named the President of the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) Foundation Board of Directors, effective July 15, 2024. Caulfield becomes the first full-time strength & conditioning coach to hold the President position.
"It is an honor and a privilege to serve as President of the NSCA Foundation Board of Directors. I am deeply grateful for the support and trust extended to me by the Foundation's Board of Directors, our Executive Director, NSCA members, and my fellow S&C coaches. Looking ahead, I am enthusiastic about continuing the legacy established by our predecessors. As a full-time college S&C coach in this role, I aspire to lead by example and encourage more college and professional coaches to engage in leadership roles, thereby shaping the future of our profession."
Caulfield assumed the presidency position from Dr. Don Melrose, who stepped down after a three-year tenure. Dr. Dave Heikken, an Associate Professor of Exercise and Sports Science at Fitchburg State University, will serve as Vice President.
"I am passionate about providing opportunities for young professionals in our field. The NSCA Foundation plays a crucial role in this by offering assistantships, scholarships, and grants to help develop tomorrow's coaches, trainers, and researchers. Through these initiatives, we can invest in the next generation and ensure their success. I am committed to working closely with the Foundation to expand these opportunities and support all of our professionals. Together, we can elevate the profession and inspire others to join us in this rewarding field. Thank you all for your continued support."
Caulfield oversees, develops, and manages the individual and group strength and conditioning programs for over 600 student-athletes at Norwich. As a native Vermonter and US Navy Veteran, he has honed his expertise through "under the bar" lifting and coaching throughout his various roles, including his tenure at the NSCA world headquarters in Colorado Springs from 2011 to 2019.
Carissa Gordon Gump, the NSCA Foundation Executive Director, praised Caulfield's placement, saying, "The appointment of Scott Caulfield by his fellow board members demonstrates the foundation's commitment to intellectual and professional diversity in its leadership, ensuring representation for all members."
Before joining the NSCA, Coach Caulfield was an assistant strength & conditioning coach at Dartmouth College from 2008 to 2011, working with football, men's and women's swimming, and men's rugby teams. Notably, from 2006 to 2008, he was the head strength and conditioning coach and director of camps for the back-to-back American Basketball Association champions, Vermont Frost Heaves.
Caulfield holds a bachelor's degree in physical education from Castleton University in 2000 and a master of arts in sports coaching from the University of Denver in 2017. His credentials include the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with Distinction (CSCS,*D) and Tactical Strength and Conditioning Facilitator with Distinctions (TSAC-F*D) certifications and Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach with Distinction (RSCCD), as well as USA Weightlifting's Level 2 Advanced Sports Performance Coach certification and Precision Nutrition's PN1 sports nutrition certification.
